1 The Government of Meghalaya is the supreme governing authority of the Indian state of Meghalaya and its 11 districts. It consists of an executive, led by the Governor of Meghalaya, a judiciary and a legislative branch. The current Governor of Meghalaya is Phagu Chauhan, who was appointed by the President of India in August 2022. The Chief Minister of Meghalaya is Conrad Sangma, who is the leader of the National People's Party (NPP). The NPP is in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form the government in Meghalaya. The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is unicameral, consisting of 60 Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A). The term of the Assembly is 5 years, unless sooner dissolved. The last Assembly elections were held in February 2023, and the NPP emerged as the single largest party with 26 seats. The BJP won 2 seats, and the Indian National Congress (INC) won 19 seats. The Meghalaya High Court is the highest court in the state of Meghalaya. It is located in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. The Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court is Justice Sanjib Banerjee. The Government of Meghalaya is responsible for the administration of the state, including the provision of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and other essential services. It also plays a role in the promotion of economic development and tourism in the state.
