1 The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is an Indian public sector undertaking based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is wholly owned by the Government of India and is responsible for the generation of electricity from nuclear power. NPCIL is administered by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). NPCIL was established on 1 September 1987 with the merger of the following organizations: The Atomic Power Plants Department (APPD) of the DAE The Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) of the DAE The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) NPCIL currently operates 10 nuclear power plants with a total installed capacity of 6,780 MW. It is also developing 7 new nuclear power plants with a total installed capacity of 10,800 MW. The current projects of NPCIL are: Kakrapar Atomic Power Project - 3&4 (600 MW each) Rajasthan Atomic Power Project - 7&8 (700 MW each) Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project - 3&4 (1000 MW each) Gorakhpur Haryana Atomic Power Project - 1&2 (700 MW each) Fleet Mode Reactors (700 MW each) NPCIL is also involved in the development of thorium-based nuclear reactors.
